The Young Adult area contains current and classic fiction titles in alphabetical order by author’s last name. At the end of the young adult fiction shelves, there are reader's advisory materials, such as book reviews, thematic book lists, popular authors’ series lists, and local schools’ Accelerated Reader program lists. New fiction books are displayed faceout on the shelves near that author’s usual spot. Several popular paperback book series are shelved on the spinner racks at the end of the Young Adult area.

Nonfiction (informational) books, CD/ROMs, and videos are shelved in Dewey Decimal number order on the last shelf in the Young Adult area. The currently popular manga (Japanese cartoon) series books are shelved in the Anime section facing the nonfiction shelf. New nonfiction is displayed on the end cap of the Young Adult bookshelf facing the Circulation Desk.

There is a shelf of talking books on cassette and on compact disc, both fiction and nonfiction, in the Young Adult area.

Entertainment videos and music CDs are interfiled with the Adult materials and are distinguished by a 'Y' before the call number.

All Young Adult materials may be checked out. All are listed in the Library’s on-line catalog. Both the Children’s desk and Adult Reference desk staff are happy to help find information for personal or school use.

Assignment Alert

Assignment Alert materials placed on reserve for school assignments are located on the table next to the Reference desk. For help, ask the Adult Reference staff. Teachers, please inform the Library of upcoming assignments so we can put books on reserve to be sure there are resources in the Library. The school librarians in each GAPS middle and high school have an Assignment Alert form that you may fill out and send to the Library by mail, fax, in person, or with a student. For more information, please contact Young Adult Librarian Doris Hicks at (541) 917-7580, ext. 4704.

Programs

The Library offers a Teen Summer Reading Program at both buildings to encourage lifelong reading and learning. This program runs yearly from mid-June to mid-August and includes age-appropriate events, contests, and prizes. The Downtown Library hosts a summer marionette performance troupe for young people ages 11 and up. View our calendar for upcoming programs.

"There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration."
